Healthy breakfast foods will help you maintain a healthy body weight and avoid blood sugar swings. Choose real, nutrient dense foods to keep your internal fires burning until it's time to eat again.
Prepared cereals generally do not make a healthy breakfast choice. They are high in sugar and additives, are highly processed making them difficult to digest and they are expensive. In a pinch, however, there are some good organic low sugar choices on the market - just make sure they are eaten on occasion and not every day.
If buying prepared cereals, be careful when you choose; learn to read the ingredients lists, not just the health claims and nutritional facts guides. Even some cereals marketed as "healthy choices" are full of sugar and are hard to digest.
What about coffee? Generally speaking, I'm not a fan of coffee. Though there have been some studies suggesting that less than 4 cups a day is not harmful and might even be beneficial, there are also risks associated with the drink. In my opinion one cup a day is not the end of the world but if you can kick the habit, all the better. There are many great coffee substitutes on the market like Bamboo, Ovaltine, and Tecchino that do not have the same negative effects as coffee.
If you need a morning energy boost, try Yerba Mate or Green tea. Even better, rely on good quality healthy breakfast foods for morning energy.
It's always a good idea to start your day by rehydrating. One great way to is to squeeze half a fresh lemon into a glass of water and drink it down. This drink is rehydrating, is full of vitamin C, is gently alkalizing, gently cleansing and stimulating to your digestion. You can add a tiny bit of maple syrup, honey or fruit juice if you need to temper the sour flavour. Lemons contains a chemical compound called limonene which raises liver enzymes and helps your body detoxify. It is thought to help the body eliminate carcinogens by helping to stimulate the Glutathione S-transferase (GTS) system. Most of the limonene is found in the skin, but some benefit can also be gained from the juice. You can also grate a little lemon rind into smoothies, salads or baking to get the effects of Limonene.
Another great way to rehydrate in the morning is with one of several fermented beveragesyou can make at home. Beet Kvass, water kefir, and kombucha are all packed with goodness and rehydrate while detoxifying and stimulating the digestion.
